A Message from the Chairman of Hobgood Little League

Hello Hobgood Families,

As all of you know, we’ve officially moved to Little League, and tomorrow will signify the Opening Day of our Inaugural Season! We are so excited to partner with the largest and oldest youth sports organization in the world and hope our community gets behind us! A tremendous amount of work has gone into the transition to Little League, and it has required countless volunteer hours from our Board of Directors and League Directors. While I know there have been bumps in the road, I hope you’ll take the time to thank one of them if you see them around the park.

We’ve also decided to make a very big deal about this Opening Day. Thanks to the leadership of our PR Director, Yvonne Curtis, we know the festivities will be a lot of fun and something to remember for a long time to come. We hope you’ll join us at the park tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. to celebrate this monumental event.

Yvonne has also been working hard on a new event for this Spring, Battle of the Ballfields. As most of you know, the Carnival has been Hobgood’s biggest fundraiser each year. Traditionally, we’ve done one in the Spring and Fall. For those of us who’ve been around a while, it was time for something different. Your Team Moms have lots of information about Battle of the Ballfields, and we’re really excited to see how our teams compete in this fun event!

I do want to remind everyone that Hobgood is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that gets no financial assistance from the state or county. We operate solely from registration fees, sponsorships and fundraising. We are also responsible for all the expenses associated with our programs and facilities. That includes umpire fees, uniforms, field maintenance, lights, water, etc. Because of all of this, we rely heavily on volunteers all around our park. From Team Moms, to Coaches, to Scorekeepers, to Board Members, we are a park full of volunteers. To those that volunteer their time, energy, and talents…I thank you from the bottom of my heart. To those that haven’t chosen to volunteer, I’d urge you to find a way to get involved. You won’t regret it!

Lastly, we realize change can be difficult and transitions can create challenges. I can assure you that we don’t take changes lightly, and we always weigh the positives and negatives. We also want you to realize we listen to you and our community. For example, we kept registration open longer this season, and we pushed Opening Day back one week. This allowed us to do a better job of capturing all the players that want to play while also managing our assessment and draft processes much more smoothly. It was a big success for our League Directors and Coaches. By moving Opening Day back one week, we avoided the CYB playoffs among other things. Both of these were great things for our park!

We hope this Spring Season is a huge success for you and your family! Thanks for trusting us with your most precious gifts…we take that responsibility very seriously. I hope to see you around the park!

And, once again, please join us tomorrow at 9 a.m. on Field 10 for a special Opening Day Ceremony, assuming Mother Nature cooperates. We ask teams to be lined up and ready to go no later than 8:45 a.m. Parking will be tight, so please utilize all of the parking available at Bascomb Elementary School in addition to the normal Hobgood Park parking lots.

Thank You,
Matt McKenna
Hobgood Chairman
